Not everyone can be a pirate. Sorry guys and gals. It's not possible. PotC takes place in the 18th century and the days of piracy in the Spanish Main are drawing to a close. It is the rise of colonies and imperialism. Men like Jack Sparrow and Barbossa are of a dying breed. Pirates are dealt with swiftly and are considered a threat to the populace in those areas with law. There still are more uncivilised locations such as Tortuga, where anything goes, but the majority of the Spanish Main has been divied up into colonies. A variety of countries have interests here - Britain, France, Spain, and the Netherlands.
Replacing the threat of the pirates gradually is the threat of imperialism and money-hungry trading companies (and the redcoats!). The triangular slave-trade is booming, etc etc. With the dusk of one infamous age thrives another (not so much, just for the record, slavery was going on before the 18th century). It's the early 1700s.
For those of you considering a less than lawful type of character, there are three types of 'Pirates', generally:
Well then, with that being said, there is going to be a cap on Buccaneers here. INCLUDING Jack Sparrow's ship, there can only be three Buccaneer pirate vessels in this role play at the present time. This means, in theory, three pirate captaincies. I would assume Jack has one, possibly Barbossa at this point, and a third individual.
We're allowing four Privateer ships. Privateers would attack ships from other countries and steal cargo. Sometimes privateers would even be commissioned to hunt down other privateers. Also, they were sometimes known to commit acts of piracy without being commissioned to do so, due to their own agendas.
The only countries allowed in this will be:
Predominantly England and France, Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands.
We're also looking for everyone else. Everyone else meaning merchants, traders, Voodoo (Vodou) practioners w/ Tia, soldiers, EITC, sailors, townspeople of various kinds, and anyone else in the Caribbean circa 1700-30.
I myself am aware the majority of the action should be on sea, but there's lots of adventuring and fighting evil (or causing evil) a landlubber (or contrary) can accomplish on land.
Feel free to make up to three characters.

- Buccaneers - West Indies based pirates. Like Jack Sparrow, generally.
- Corsairs - Pirates/Privateers from the Mediterranean.
- Privateers - A privateer was a pirate who by commission or letter of marque from the government was authorized to seize or destroy a merchant vessel of another nation.
